Riva's history dates back to 1842, when Pietro Riva established a small boatyard in Sarnico, on Lake Iseo, Italy. The misfortunes of the fishermen on Lake Iseo, who had a large number of their boats damaged, was the impetus that allowed Pietro to demonstrate his superior abilities as a boat repairer and builder. However, it was his son Ernesto Riva, a genius in design, and the introduction of the gas engine that propelled Riva to the forefront of the worldwide yachting industry.
Ernesto's use of a car-style steering wheel and gauge layout was unheard of at the time. He combined this with the gas engine driven hull design and superb styling, all of which won him renown for not only capturing a collection of national and international victories in power boat races between 1920's and the 1930's, but for capturing the eyes and hearts of the rich and famous round the world.
Riva Yachts was and is the perfect blend of style, performance and quality; these attributes were celebrated in films like Golden Eye and several other Bond movies, the original Italian Job and recently in Oceans 12. The most famous Riva brand was in fact inspired by the American movie industry as the wide screen CINERAMA format of the 1960s came out when the marque Riva brand, the AQUARAMA, was introduce. Movie stars flocked to the brand, like Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, Brigitte Bardot, Sophia Loren and of course Princess Grace.
In 2000 the Ferretti Group took over ownership of this iconic brand which had struggled with the switching to larger fiberglass models. Ferretti brought their high level of engineering and production quality to an already superior product and now has a large line of Riva yacht for their clients to choose from. The Riva line stays distinct in their style. It is easy to see the heritage of Riva and the attributes that captured the imagination of so many famous people in the past in the models they offer today.

Note: The first experience for this writer with a Riva Yacht was taking an Aquariva Super from St. Thomas USVI to St. Marteen in the winter of 1982. This was a new wood version just delivered by ship. The owner of one of the major hotels in St. Marteen hired two of us to bring it across on what was supposed to be a pleasant day. A day later we arrived in St. Marteen after battling 12' to 14' seas. After he drove her around the bay to the waves of family on the beach, we tied up at the marina and lifted the boat out of the water on her lift. A very careful inspection showed not a crack or a bit of damage even though we had launched the boat completely out of the water on several occasions even at slow speeds. From that day forward I have had nothing but the highest regards for Riva Yachts. Their superb award-winning styling is matched by their strength and quality!
