Continued from above Larger yachts over 130' are starting to become available at price levels not envisioned previously. Building slots are starting to appear for new builds at some of the best shipyards in the world. In the smaller range, between 60' and 90', brokers are willing to present almost any realistic offer to sellers in the hope that sellers might negotiate prices. The best deals are being done when buyers are willing to close quickly, ensuring sellers that they have a commitment. There is no sense of panic for most sellers of large yachts, but the reality is that ‘qualified’ buyers can make a good deal. Sellers are realistic about this 'new' market, and are amending their expectations. As a note to buyers expecting panicked sellers, I must say this is not the reality. Boats are not being 'given away' as some buyers expect, and the intrinsic value of good boats remain high. Of great importance when purchasing a vessel is the input I can suggest regarding re-sale. Too often this issue is given insufficient consideration when purchasing a yacht. I feel that the issue of re-sale is vitally important when considering a vessel for purchase. Input from the broker will help find a yacht with good re-sale potential, avoiding a yacht which may be difficult or slow to re-sell. My experience with this issue is one of the driving forces behind creating this web-site, allowing us the time to meet early in the process, to consider the purchase your new yacht.It is all too easy to relate accounts of vessels which have either been sold below the sellers expectations, or taken too long a time to sell. I believe this can be avoided at the time of purchase, and it is a 'hot button' issue that I believe should be as important to the buying conditions as should be the survey report. An experienced broker knows this, and will be interested in future re-sale for his client, as well as purchase. One final note. I do not list sail boats under 50' on my data base. I have been professionally involved in the yachting industry since 1973. I am also, a Captain with extensive offshore experience, approaching 240,000 n.m., with an emphasis on large sailing yachts. My first dealings as a broker involved the sale of a 76’ cruising sloop, and since that time I have sold a number of large sailing yachts, the largest being a 135’ Perini Navi. My experience as a sailing skipper has been of benefit to myself and my clients.
