The Monaco Yacht Show Report for 2008, Fort Lauderdale Show Coming Up! This months Monaco International Boat Show showcased the newest mega yachts over 120’ from the World’s premier builders. Sailing vessels and motor yachts from Feadship, Vitters, Baglietto, San Lorenzo, Lurssen C.R.N., Perini, Wally, Proteksan and Nerieds, amongst others, astounded the experienced group of brokers attending because of the quality of the yachts on display. The brokerage vessels for sale represented the full spectrum of large yachts available from around the world, with examples from A&R, Alloy, Christensen, Palmer Johnson, Jongert and Royal Huisman to name just a few. The general view of buyers, brokers and industry experts was “quality and size is up, but sellers and shipyards were very willing to talk ‘deals’”. “This in the strongest buyer’s market ever” was a comment frequently heard, and several deals were being negotiated at better than 25% under asking price, with some deals expected to be even better for buyers. Several deals were being negotiated for boats to be used in the ever buoyant and lucrative Mediterranean Charter market, and the trend towards breaking from the traditional ‘white-yacht’ was exemplified by the new ‘explorer’ style yacht from PROTEKSAN-TURQUOISE Yachts.
Sailing yachts from Vitters, Wally and Perini showed designs that weren’t apparent at previous shows, representing mega sized yachts with almost dinghy like performance. Massive yachts to be raced boat-for-boat across oceans, or around the buoys at places like Puerto Cervo, St. Bart’s, Nantucket, St. Tropez or Auckland. Comfortable and luxurious enough to cruise the world, yet with a competitive performance edge born from America’s Cup racing. All-in-all, it was a great time to be a broker in Monaco this year, to meet the builders and suppliers of what just might the first real progressive change affecting the look and type of yachts we be selling for years to come. The strongest impression of the show; 2008 and 2009 will be the best ‘buyers market’ we have seen in a long time. The Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show starts at the end of October, and if Monaco can be used as an indicator, the buyers will be looking to cement some fantastic deals.
